Development & Proof-Of-Concept REELS

PARAMOUNT GLOBAL | MTV ENTERTAINMENT STUDIOS

Every show begins as an idea. This is where ideas take their first breath.

Proof-of-Concept Reels

Some of the most exciting work in entertainment begins with an idea. A spark on a page that needs to be transformed into something tangible enough for executives, talent, and partners to believe in.

During my tenure at Paramount, and specifically at MTV Entertainment Studios, a core part of my role was taking those early ideas and bringing them to life through cinematic proof-of-concept films. Unlike traditional sizzle reels, many of these pieces were intentionally longer, designed to showcase tone, character, and narrative engine in greater depth. The goal was not simply to tease a concept, but to demonstrate the story and allow decision-makers to fully experience its potential.

These reels translated early ideas into tone, story, and visual language, giving stakeholders a clear sense of not just what a project was, but what it could become.

The work spanned a wide range of concepts. Documentary pitches explored the untold story behind Nirvana Unplugged in New York, the cultural impact of Yo! MTV Raps, and the life and legacy of Nipsey Hussle. Other concepts reimagined existing franchises or pushed new formats into unexplored territory.

While not every concept ultimately moved forward, each served a critical purpose. These films helped package projects and open conversations with platforms including Hulu, Amazon, and Disney+, positioning ideas for partnership during a rapidly evolving streaming landscape leading into the launch of Paramount+.

This kind of development work requires a different creative muscle. It’s storytelling at its earliest stage, building something compelling enough to inspire belief before a project officially exists.

Creating something out of nothing is both the challenge and the thrill.

NIRVANA UNPLUGGED

Nirvana’s Unplugged in New York was never meant to become Kurt Cobain’s final statement, but history turned it into one.

What began as a stripped-down acoustic performance for MTV in 1993 would ultimately become one of the most haunting and revered live recordings ever captured.

This development reel explored the story behind that night. Not just the performance itself, but the creative choices, tensions, and quiet defiance that shaped it.

Instead of delivering the expected catalog of hits, Cobain chose a different path. The setlist leaned heavily on obscure covers and deep cuts. The stage, dressed with candles and lilies, carried the atmosphere of a funeral, something far more intimate and fragile than a typical Unplugged taping.

The result was a performance that felt less like a television special and more like a moment suspended in time.

Through never-before-seen archival footage, music history, and firsthand accounts from those who were there, the reel explored how a single evening inside Sony Music Studios became one of the most powerful live performances ever recorded. A show that would take on even deeper meaning following Cobain’s death just five months later.

More than a concert film, the project was envisioned as a cultural time capsule.

A performance never intended to be a goodbye, yet one that ultimately became one of the most unforgettable farewells in music history.

Yo! MTV Raps: THE UNTOLD STORY OF HIP HOP

When Yo! MTV Raps premiered in 1988, hip hop was already exploding in cities across America. On television, it was still largely absent from the mainstream cultural conversation. This development reel explored the story of the series that helped change that.

Hosted by Fab 5 Freddy, and later Ed Lover and Doctor Dre, Yo! MTV Raps became the first television program to bring hip hop culture into millions of homes every day. At a time when the music industry and many television networks were still hesitant to embrace rap, the show gave a global platform to artists shaping an entirely new cultural movement.

The series broke through barriers that extended far beyond music. It introduced audiences to the language, fashion, politics, and storytelling emerging from Black communities long underrepresented in mainstream media.

For many viewers around the world, Yo! MTV Raps was their first encounter with hip hop culture presented authentically on television. The show connected fans across racial, geographic, and cultural lines, transforming what had once been seen as niche or controversial into a global force. Beyoncé and Eminem have both cited the series as an early introduction to hip hop.

Production for this project required a deep dive into the MTV archives, unearthing and digitizing hundreds of hours of footage that had remained in boxes for more than three decades. Through archival material, artist interviews, and cultural context, the concept explores how a daily television series helped dismantle barriers in music, media, and culture, becoming a gateway for hip hop’s rise to global dominance.

NIPSEY HUSSLE DOCUMENTARY

No artist embodied the connection between music, entrepreneurship, and community the way Nipsey Hussle did.

This documentary concept explored the life and legacy of the late rapper, whose influence extended far beyond the recording studio. Raised in the Crenshaw neighborhood of South Los Angeles, Nipsey built a career that reflected a larger vision, rooted not just in personal success, but in reinvestment, ownership, and long-term impact within the community that raised him.

Through music, business, and activism, he championed a model of independence that challenged traditional paths in the industry. His Marathon Clothing store became more than a retail brand. It stood as a symbol of ownership and economic empowerment in a neighborhood often overlooked by traditional investment.

This reel combined archival footage from MTV with original reporting captured in the days following his death. Cameras documented the outpouring of grief, pride, and celebration as thousands gathered for his memorial and funeral procession through the streets of Crenshaw.

Those images revealed something deeper than the loss of a musician. They captured the passing of a community leader whose work had already begun to reshape what success and responsibility could look like for a new generation.

This concept film explored how Nipsey Hussle’s vision of ownership, resilience, and community investment helped redefine the role of the modern artist. Not just as a voice in culture, but as a force for change within it.

AMAZINGNESS

What began as a live television experiment evolved into a fully developed competition series.

In 2017, building on the success of MTV’s long-running hit Ridiculousness, I executive produced and served as showrunner for Ridic Live, a two-hour weekly, Friday night event hosted by Rob Dyrdek. The show leaned into the chaotic, unpredictable energy that made Ridiculousness a fan favorite, blending comedy, celebrity guests, and live audience participation into an irreverent variety experience.

The success of Ridic Live sparked a larger idea. What if the viral spectacle that powered Ridiculousness could evolve into a full-scale game show?

Working closely with Rob Dyrdek, a development reel was created for a new concept titled Win Big with Rob Dyrdek. The proof of concept captured that same high-energy tone while introducing a competition format built around extraordinary viral moments and human achievement. The reel resonated immediately with MTV executives and led to the development of a new series, eventually produced as Amazingness.
